Flaminia / 1-2-3 Distributor
« Last post by Charles on Today at 04:49:44 PM »
Having got the carburettors on my convertible in tolerable balance and with the engine running sweetly on the original Bosch distributor with contact points, I decided to go ahead and fit a 1-2-3 electronic distributor.  I purchased a bluetooth unit so that I could store different advance curves on my mobile phone and then download the one I wished to use in seconds.  Having fitted the unit, I can report that it works well and does everything advertised.  I bought the unit from Omicron, partly because their price was competitive and partly because they supply additional instructions tailored for the Aurelia/Flaminia. But, installing it took a lot longer than expected because it just did not fit – physically, I mean. As you will well know the access to the distributor on the Flamina is not good. So, I just could not understand why the unit would not slide down the tube and engage the drive dog.  My initial thought was that the stepped shaft housing was slightly oversize and my vernier did seem to show its diameter to be a few microns larger than the old Bosch unit.  So, I gently removed material until my vernier showed it to be a fraction of a mm smaller than the old unit – but it still wouldn’t go down the tube and engage.  I got out my trusty micrometer screw gauge, which showed that the shaft housing was definitely not oversize. So, off came the bonnet so as to gain better access and it was then apparent that the lower “shoulder” of the 1-2-3 unit was fouling on a bulge on the corner of the inlet manifold nearest the dizzy.  At least I now understood why it wouldn’t fit, but it had taken several hours to get there.  The solution was to use my Dremel to take a couple of mm off the bulge on the inlet manifold. The picture shows where I had to relieve the inlet manifold (yellow circle). This was not difficult and didn't take long but much time would have been saved if the tailored instructions had mentioned the problem. Maybe this only applies to 3C cars with their unique inlet manifold but it would have been nice to know.

Fulvia / Re: Fulvia Coupe S2 Restoration (Owners Notes 2)
« Last post by GlynW on Yesterday at 04:49:07 PM »
After trying out some of the procedures in our own Restoration Notes on the car that was not used for the documented work, Norm and I have now updated the sections on handbrake adjustment and replacement of heater cables in RHS cars.

It turns out that handbrake adjusters can be fitted in two different orientations, changing the shoe which is adjusted and the direction of rotation required to lock the brake.  The relevant TAV (TAV43) shows the adjuster acting on the rear shoe, and we assume this was the factory default.

Replacement of the left-side heater control cables in all RHD Coupes is obstructed by the glovebox.  In later S2 cars, there are holes in the side of the glovebox that give access to the screws which secure the cable sheath clamps.  However in earlier S2 cars these holes are absent.  This is now described in the Notes and a suitable template for drilling access holes in the glovebox has been provided in an Appendix.

I have also compiled a short selection of Outtakes - these are photos that were considered for inclusion but omitted in order to reduce the file size.

Finally, I have added the Powerpoint artwork in PDF and ODP ('Open Document') formats for those that would like to use it to record work performed or required on their own cars.

All files can be viewed and downloaded using the links below.

Flavia / cam shaft needed
« Last post by colinw on Yesterday at 02:42:20 PM »
Hello all
I am in need (ideally) of a pair of cam shafts for my 1800 natural aspirated Flavia coupe. ie 815-330 engine number 013989.
The engine number is not stamped on the engine block itself as far as I can see but only on metal plate riveted to the wheel arch inside the engine compartment. If the engine has been changed over the life time of the car this (as built) engine number would be incorrect. So saying, if anyone has a pair of cams then I could have them measured to compare with those that I already have.  One of the lobes on the shaft has been built up to repair with weld and re-ground but has failed resulting in a damaged follower. I am reluctant to have the lobe re-welded to have the same happen again.
hope someone can help.
Incidentally, there was a change on the 815.300 engine from engine 19078 / 19079.
thank you
regards
Colin

Hard to know what is going on - but it might be the thermostats not working right. There is a cold start one, which needs to back off as the car warms up. This has got a wax based plunger - and replacing ours made all the difference. Just a thought. Just remade by BMW folks:

Car was not going well so I took it to a local garage. The chap did a good job, certainly with the starting issues and sorting the wobbly centre console, the latter was giving me the creeps...it was also struggling under power and was almost cutting out. I hoped that had been sorted but it started doing it again today.....car was going fine for the first mile then started to lose power, would hardly move forward and was chugging/spluttering away....managed to get it back home and as I neared home it seemed to get better.
These are the same symptoms as the last drive around...the car has had all new fuel lines/hoses and fuel filters, injectors have all been cleaned and checked, both Omicron and the local garage said the fuel pump was working well...how frustrating!

Aprilia, Ardennes and Ardea / Aprilia floor pans - now available again
« Last post by simonandjuliet on Yesterday at 07:52:35 AM »
Copy of a piece that I have sent to Viva Lancia for hopefully the next edition .... should be self explanatory !

"Aprilia Floor Pans - An update on this project

Some of you may know that this project was initiated some time ago and for a variety of reasons, it  has taken some time to complete – but all is well !

Following a hiatus due to Bill Lewis’s retirement, we started the project to remake the floors, using new tooling. The floors are visually identical to the originals and come in 4 pieces. They have some extra metal around the edges to help fitting – they can be cut to size and then dropped in, or flanges can be made, depending on the state of your existing floors and cills.

David Ashworth from “Lancia Classic” has been making lovely Fulvia/Aurelia repair panels for many years, he has made the floor pans and I have funded the project

In order to cover my outlay and initial tooling etc, there are 6 sets of panels available at £650 plus p&p and then other sets will then be available directly from “Classic Lancia” at a slightly higher price

Please note that I am not profiting from this initiative, so please think about buying a set if you need or anticipate needing new floors in the future

You can contact me or David directly – the panels are in the UK

Dear all -
A new publication,  "Lancia's First V Engines", has been completed. It focuses on the period from 1914-1922, leading up to the Lambda. Much new information is included in the small, 200 pg. booklet, heavily illustrated, for the serious Lancista.

Its available from David Thomas Books.
See: http://www.lanciaaurelia.info/lancias-first-v-engines.html for some sample images, pages.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the info guys. I think I'll nip out and get some PTFE spray and try that. I'll let you know if it makes a difference. Thanks again
