Hi all
I was contacted about the availability of solenoids for the pre engaged starters and I knew we had several in their original boxes so I decided to test them before dispatching them. Well time has not been kind to these solenoids or I am doing something wrong. First up I had an idea to fit the solenoid to an existing working motor but discovered that the pin in the armature end was larger than the original and it would not drop into the lever inside the motor. It was a performance to get the old one back in so Plan B required. Surely I thought if we apply 12 volts across the coil of the solenoid it should produce a loud clack as it pulled the spring loaded armature in to push the starter motor teeth into the flywheeland connect the full current of the battery. Alas no, not one of six apparently unused solenoids could muster enough magnetic attraction to pull the armature in, a couple could hold the armature in if the armature was pushed in a little. There is lots of sparking coming off the terminals so I am thinking the whole batch is faulty and will have to go into the skip.

They probably just need opening up, cleaning and light lubrication.
