Rev counter help
« on: 05 April, 2025, 09:47:03 PM »
Evening all,

I have a rev counter problem and looking for some advice.

Last year the needle started to flick up the rev range occasionally. Then it became more often and suddenly started banging up against the stop.

I disconnected the drive from the counter to avoid damage and assuming it was the flexible drive inner, replaced it with a new one but the problem remained.

I am assuming the problem is with the counter itself but it does look like a bit of a saga to get out.

So - just before I take it out, any ideas on what might be the cause?

If I do have to take it out, any tips on removal? It feels like there are two fixings (behind the two chrome bolt heads on the dash) plus the oil line.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks.

I would say that the poor old rev counter is well and truly due for a clean-up, possibly new bushes/bearings and lubrication.
Jerkiness in the pointer is usually a sign of worn bushes in the mechanism particularly since you might have eliminated the cable as causing the problem. The worn bushes allow the rotating portion, driven by the cable, to touch the part that moves the pointer (and is counteracted by a spring).
Removal is more a case of contortionism than anything else! However, just disconnect the battery, disconnect the rev counter cable and the oil line and pull out the warning lamp holders.
Undo the knurled nuts holding the instrument in place and it should be able to be removed from the dashboard.
Then make a booking with a physiotherapist!!

If you undo the chrome bolts in the dash you should find the instrument comes out  quite easily ( having disconnected the oil feed and electrical connections) but small hands are a bonus.

When you have removed the rev counter don't be tempted to start the engine, you'll have a nice steady stream of oil all over your legs 😁
