Setting 1600 float levels

I am having running issues with our '72 1600 Fulvia Sport.  Intermittently the idle drops.  Also, it tends to stumble between 2500 and 3500 rpms when holding the accelerator steady.  Generally does well while accelerating under full throttle.  The emulsion tubes are 180, not stock 175.    If I have to adjust the float levels, can it be done without the Lancia jig?  Or, does anyone sell the jig? Thanks.

After the car has run at tickover, switch off and remove the 2 little hatches (2 screws each) on top of the carbs where you will find slow running jet, 2 emulsion tubes and a slow running on each carb. Take out the front emulsion tube of each carb and use a small cable tie mark with a datum 30mm up from its end (cut the lead in part of the cable tie off). Then carefully insert to the level of the brass bush (that houses the emulsion tube) top surface. You will see on removal of the dipstick where the fuel has wicked to. 21mm or less from datum shows fuel is not low less than 17mm risks the fuel dribbling into the venturi unaided….


Emlusion tubes of 180 sound like the multi hole 1300phh type. If you get the correct emulsion tubes these must have a brass spacer washer under them.


Not sure your issues are carb though as stumble could be valve timing.

Thanks.  I will give it a go and report back.  I have the 175 emulsion tubes which I will install.  The timing should be okay as this spring I sent the car to a Lancia specialist, and one of the things he did was to install an new timing chain and tensioners as it appears the old chain skipped a tooth.

There is only one tensioner in the Fulvia engine, BTW it takes a stronger spring than the 1.3 engine one. Rechecking the valve timing and the ignition timing might be useful.

Agree check the valve timing if chain has been changed.... 1600 particularly fussy but has vernier so it can be set very accurately (in the scheme of things +/- 2 degrees).
