I think in the pictures the sealing ring looks thinner on the old one because it has shrivelled up. I can live with the 2 keys but as you say 3 would be a bind.

Fresh petrol in started on full choke...ran like a bag of chisels! Took the dizzy cap off and the contacts were bit furry so quick sand clean with brake cleaner back on the car and some improvement but still backfiring and stalling so I am down to spark plugs (again) and/or water in the carb. I should get a full day tomorrow so might get some progress. I have an old timing light I can use to see if the plugs are sparking. I remember the big difference new spark plugs made so might be prudent to buy some tomorrow and change them while the engine is cold.

ps boy that steering is heavy so we cranked the compressor up and stuck 40psi in the tyres at least they didn't burst!

Once you get the setup right it should start on the button. From cold I give about 2/3 choke, two strokes on the accelerator, then it fires first turn. That's at coming up to 120k miles and living outdoors 24-7 for the last 18 years.

In my dreams Frank...Looking back over this saga I think it was pointed out that the accelerator pump was important regarding flat spots and when I see the time the car is stood idle I feel the accelerator jet is involved in the dreadful flat spots we have. Stuck in waiting for a parcel today and also changing wheels on Sarah's VW as a big lump of wire had gone through the side wall causing a slow puncture.

I do remember my Y10 Fila was thrashed to with in an inch of it's life and the gear change and general running were never an issue unlike the Touring I had.

As previous episode I bought some new plugs and cracked on to get them in but the old ones were a surprise it looks like we only had 1 cylinder with the others joining in now and then. So we put the new plugs in and I thought I should test the accelerator jet. With the carb on the car it was hard to see what was going on but there was no smell of petrol so I removed the carb to the bench and took the top cover off. Coincidence but now the accelerator jet was working with a very fine jet of petrol...the piston stuck? I had noticed the pipe from the breather near the air filter was fouling the accelerator pump linkage so put a new pipe on, in addition the pipe to the distributor vacuum diaphragm had a hole in it so will replace that when the carb goes back on. So the big start up will have to wait.

So new plugs in, petrol fresh, dizzy cap cleaned out, split and brittle pipes on air filter etc changed, carb rebuilt and all back together. The car started but was running very badly but I could feel the accelerator jet had joined the party so that was an improvement but a spin round the block revealed not running on all 4 and wanting to stall. Very disappointing so up with the bonnet and a rummage revealed the cable for the cutout valve on the carb not connected. This might explain the poor running so on with the wire and a restart and the car was now on all 4 and would even tickover but still not 100% so an improvement. I did notice the gasket on the carb had torn when I rebuilt it so a possible fault there but what puzzled me was how could the car run with no power to the cutout valve?

Does it suggest that the cut off valve isn't working properly? I must have spare carbs if you wanted to try one.

update
I noticed the cambelt was very slack and was wondering if the belt had jumped a few teeth during all the backfiring and kangarooing so the belt and idler (this was quite rusty) were changed. The timing marks on the cam sprocket and the flywheel were lined up and still correct after 2 rotations so all good. Next job is to refit the original carb and give it run out to warm it up and adjust the tickover.

More done today as the original carb was refitted and the car started up after a couple of 'wet' laps and undercover to get the engine fully warmed up to have a go at the tickover. When I started the tickover was at around 1200rpm but with a bit of trial and error it was around 750rpm when we were finished and the car was a lot more driveable. There is still a splashy feel to the exhaust and the occasional miss so still work to do. So next job compression test possible sticky valve, check the ignition timing with a strobe light, get hold of an exhaust gas analyzer as acting on the mixture screw will get the engine hunting but it is very lumpy at low revs. An adjacent mechanic thought the carb was the culprit followed by a valve, whereas I am concerned about the fuel pump not doing the do at low revs. In all I was quite pleased with today as the car is running a lot better than it has been of late and we still have a few things we can check to improve it further.

The car looks funny in the photo above as it has 3 155/70 tyres and an 135/80 tyre.

Hi all
Had a look at the compressions today to see if there was a sticky valve or broken valve spring. The results were inconclusive and confusing as the readings were no1 80psi no2 82psi no3 80psi and no4 76 psi. All the plugs were dry but sooty. The car starts OK but is a bit lumpy at tickover but 80psi seems very low. The chap in the next unit has promised to bring his temperature reader so we can tell if the exhausts are all the of same heat value...very high tech!

Hi all
I have decided to get the Y10 back inside as the weather has worsened and I can't see me doing much when it is lashing down with rain. So over the next week or so I will bring it in from the cold rather than cover it.

The little monkey is warm and dry with it's older brothers but only after a transmission disaster as the link between the gear box and the linkage parted company leaving a lovely smooth change but no gears. a quick rummage under the bonnet revealed the problem and it was quickly shoved back in and we were off. The picture shows the link pushed back in, it seems the clip securing it has gone AWOL so I will have to replace the clip.

Hi all.
The Y10 was started up today and had a little drive out into the carpark under it's own power and sounded quite good, with the engine getting smoother as the choke was pushed in (sunny but quite cool on the NE coast) I did notice the very heavy steering so some pumping up to do. I am off to pick up a welding stand that is on wheels next week so we might be able to get the sills on and the floors patched up. I will have to look at the gear linkage as it feels a bit fragile and one gearchange away from a box full of neutrals but at least it is not a problem inside the gearbox.
