Rear leaf springs for Flavia 2000 Coupe 1970
« on: 13 September, 2021, 10:36:17 PM »
I need replacement Rear leaf springs for my Flavia 2000 Coupe 1970. It seems my best hope for new replacements would be Midland Springs, but they are asking for a spring to use as a template. Mine are not suitable, as it looks to me as if a leaf or two leaves have been cut through to lower the car
  • , and the spring re-assembled and taped - so I can't trust the camber to be right, and they might not even have the right number of leaves.

I have found technical info, so can give Midland Springs the camber, the deflection under load, the 5 cm spring width, 30 mm eye I.D. But can any-one tell me the correct number of leaves [looks like 6 number in the Parts catalogue], and the thickness of each leaf? Or even better, lend me a spring for a template [I'll pay carriage and return of course]

Or recommend any-where else to get new built or OE spare or reasonable second-hand?

Many thanks, Mark I

PS * A later owner, to compensate, had added additional coil springs on top of the leaf springs. Not flat helper-springs, but coil-over springs that were far too stiff, giving a very high tail and a wobbly ride cornering. The up-side was that removal required only a gentle tug!

Adam, thanks. I've just got hold of a couple of s/h springs that should fit mine, plus a good condition one to take to the Midland Spring Co rep in Cornwall as a template. I'll post when I've more news

Early rear springs had a rear silent block and the front fastened to a mini axle. Later cars had a different front mounting like the rear silent block. Springs are not really interchangeable from early to late or vice versa
Its not the winning but taking part! or is it taking apart?

how many leaves are on the early rear spring I have a 1963 flavia coupe as a parts car and it has 3
I wondered if the convertible had more, 3 does not seem enough
As you say the fittings are the same as on my convertible
thanks for all your help, is there a workshop manual
i have the Club downloads but do not find them easy to use

I do know Cavallito offer a re lining of leaf springs, I would certainly email them and see if they could help in your slightly different situation

I believe 6 leaves are standard for all models plus a small one above the main leaf according to the parts book and same for all 815 Flavia models although Tav52 lists 9 different part numbers for specific Flavia models (including uprated for toweing...) I canoot believe Cavalitto will stock more than one (if that) but worth an ask - best part number probably 1390225.

My own 63 coupe has what looks like 6 leaves of varying lengths, picture taken last month when I took the axle off. No idea if the later saloons were different mind!.

thanks for all your help, on looking close at my 1963 flavia coupe parts car it has only 4 leaf springs
I may have to fit it to my Flavia Convertible and see how high it sits

Leaf springs being removed is often a result of trying to lower the car, either that or at some point (not hard to believe) the springs have been changed for aftermarket ones, a lot happens in 60+ years of a cars' life!
