Hi all
Grabbed a bit of time on the spanners and have tried out the powder coated rocker cover I had done...looks very smart, I can't decide if I should clean the paint off the LANCIA script. I have also started lapping in the second cylinder head valves but I am puzzled by the numbering next to the spark plug holes as they don't match the firing order. I seem to remember a post about this being the case...any one know the facts on this? The con rods are numbered and no 1 is at the fan end. I have been using a Gunson lapper in gadget you put in your electric drill it does the job and with a cordless drill is easy to use. The valve seats are OK but the inlet and exhaust are obviously different material as the exhaust ones take a lot more time.

I don't remember any of mine having a top tap for the cooling system. The block has a thin pipe that runs down to the side of the aluminium manifolds that the drain tap attaches to so everything drains out at the same point.

The numbering by the spark plug holes matches the numbering on the distributor cap. Each plug lead starts and finishes at the same number.

What a clever and logical idea when you think about it, have never heard of that but it makes life simpler, when you know!

People get all sorts of confused about this. It's the firing sequence at the distributor....

This is the heater tap, by the distributor.

As to ignition numbering, I think the Birmingham Berlina still has its factory original plug leads and they are also numbered to match the distributor cap and spark plug hole.

Nice touch from the factory Frank...on my car someone has hacksawed lines on the old
distributor cap to indicate which cylinder the leads go to. I had Omicron make a set up for me and I wonder if they are numbered like yours?

Anyway back to the engine rebuild, I spent a couple of hours yesterday lapping an exhaust valve in as the seat was quite pitted, luckily there is plenty of meat on the valve so a bit more time today should see the seat sorted, then a last inlet valve seat and both heads will have all the valves lapped in and re-fitted. A quick wash down and possibly put the  heads back on the block and start sorting the valve gear out.

Hi all
Head number 2 has had the last couple of valves lapped in and the head washed down to get rid of the grit and old oil. I think I will do the paraffin test on the heads before they go back on the engine. I have put the rocker cover on to keep the grunge off the nice clean head..
