Hose blowing off top of right pillar!?
« on: 30 April, 2025, 09:36:35 PM »
This has happened twice now: as I raise the car on (what we here in The States call) a lift, the fluid hose blows off the top of the right pillar! Yes, it's a mess! The lever at the fluid reservoir is in the center position. Confession: I'd filled the reservoir with 50W oil, trying to see what if any effect this might have on the action of the sliding pillar. Note that it waits about 30 seconds after the wheel is off the ground, the car about 2/3 of the way up in the air, when this happens. Does anyone have any idea why this hose is blowing off?

Hi, this might be a patronising question, but could it be that the filler pipe is too short, so when the pillar goes to 'full droop' the hose is pulled off? Nothing else comes to mind.

Thanks William. No offense taken, but the hose is plenty long and is secured by the proper clip. As one might expect, to make the secured hose come off, there must be significant pressure and it does come off with a clearly audible "pop". I wish I could understand the movement of the upper fluid in the description of the suspension's operation because clearly somehow pressure is developing in the upper chamber,. But note that the wheel has been at full droop for around 30 seconds before the hose blows off.

Did you ever sort out the cause of the blowing off problem? I dont think there should be any pressure in the top half of the sliding pillar to cause the no matter what movement the sus[pension is making. Have sliding pillars been disassembled and re-assembled incorrectly?

No, the problem is still a mystery. I agree there should be no pressure in the upper chamber to cause such a blow-out. The entire front suspension was sent to and rebuilt by Thornley Kelham about 9 years/15,000 km ago. It is a true puzzle so far.

This is my old s.2 car, and this problem is a mystery to me too. I don't recall ever having this situation, but then again, maybe didn't have exactly the same conditions? On the other hand, of course the car was up in the air and there was the droop....
Just trying to think this through - with the droop, perhaps additional air or pressure is coming from a bleed of either air or oil from lower part of suspension tower? Not sure what else it could be, and also not sure about this either.
Maybe get rid of the 50W oil, go back to 20W or 30W, and see if the problem replicates?
Sorry not to be more helpful...

Mine has done the same thing actually.
And, it has always been in conjunction with me (over)filling the dampers, then raising the car on my car lift.
Now that I have learnt that you should not constantly top up the dampers (although it is tempting to do so, as it is such a novel an cool feature) the problem has gone away.

Thanks impaw. I am certainly gulity of keeping the dampers (over)full. I'll avoid this, wait for noise before operating the plunger, and see if the problem resolves. If it doesn't, I'll next go back to 20W or 30W for the upper chamber oil.
Thanks to all for your help!

Overfilling makes much sense. Thanks for this insight!
