That's what I would do.

That's interesting, we didn't have any problems with ours, but perhaps this is a difference between series 1 and 2?

That does make it look like the width of the filter is the problem rather than the adaptor.

S1 and S2 Ardea engines have the mesh oil filter under the distributor. Thus, there is no room for an oil filter and its adaptor.

Can't help on the fitting issue, but just a thought on the oil filter types shown in various post in the thread: The shorter 23.447.00 is the one to use (as supplied by the manufacturer?) and not the taller 23.445.00 - this is because the 23.447.00 has both anti-drain back and anti-syphon valves to counter any start-up issues for vertical mounting as commented in one of the posts.  The 23.445.00 only has an anti-drain back valve for horizontal orientations. The UFI specs are here, where the "R" is the valve count - both are the same diameter and I don't think you'll find anything smaller in that respect:

If you do need a taller filter with 2 valves, then the later Montecarlo type is one to go for:

Studs have to come out. Of course the last one fought me but the butcher mole grips eventually prevailed

Yes, it does require a tap of a hammer to clear the exhaust nut.

No need to go to all this work. Gamberini in Bologna makes a very neat adaptor. Just be sure to specify the diametre of the hole at the bottom of the oil filter housing in the block, as there are at least two sizes. https://autofficinagamberini.com or +39-051-761409. Their mechanic Ricardo speaks good English. Very nice people, experienced in all matters Lancia.

Hi Peter, these are the filters from sr Gamberini, we organised a group purchase and like anything Aprilia, there is no such thing as a "standard Lancia" so there have been some variation when it comes to fitting.

As you say, there are a couple of versions 18 & 25 mm
