820 2000 coupe Horn
« on: 24 October, 2025, 08:36:19 AM »
Having now resolved all lighting and indicator problems, the horn, that did work, has given up. If I earth the black wire from the solenoid the horn works so everything is OK at that end. This wire should go into the 4 way red connection block under the dash, there is a space for it, but there is no wire coming from the other part of the block that should go to the horn push. Does anyone know whether the steering wheel needs to come off to access the wire, if indeed there is one? I have taken the horn push off.

This has also been posted on general chat. Which is the best place?

If you follow the circuit diagram in the Instruction manual you will see that the horn relay is earthed by the pushbutton (in the same way that happened when you earthed the black wire from the relay).
It would seem that the wire from the four-way plug to the carbon brush at the top of the steering column might be missing. This brush rubs on the brass ring on the back of the horn button assembly. Is the carbon brush in place? The wire from it should come out through a hole in the steering shaft support column and into the four-way plug.

Thanks Brian. However, I should have said that a lot of the wiring is not original and has been re-configured to some extent, not least there being a 'modern' solenoid attached adjacent to the steering support bracket. I have removed the horn push assembly, spring etc, but can see no evidence of a wire or brush either in that assembly or on top of the steering wheel hub, nor a wire exiting the steering support column. On the basis that the horn push worked before re- establishing the lights I can only assume that there must be a wire, or brush, attached to the steering wheel on the underside of the hub which is not visible without removing the steering wheel?

You have to remove the steering wheel. leave the column nut on by a few threads that way you wont hit yourself in the face when you try to tug it off the splines...
Its not the winning but taking part! or is it taking apart?
