Despite his history of poking fun at Lancia I recall him declaring on Top Gear that Lancia was the greatest car manufacturer in the world. That was based on the poll of the world's leading motoring journalists to vote for the most significant 100 cars of the first 100 years of motoring. Most manufacturers you can think of got a car in the list; Ford with the Model T, Austin with the 7, Morris with the Mini, even Sunbeam and Vauxhall with Edwardian racers. The great marques like Ferrari and Porsche got two cars in to the list but only Lancia beat that and not with an extra car to make it three but doubling anybody else with four. And that was before the integrale was established enough to be in the running, Lambda, Aprilia, Aurelia and Stratos being the choices.
