Starter motor pinion
« on: 21 September, 2026, 06:05:43 PM »
I have had my Bosch starter motor refurbished and it is now in fine fettle but has a tendency to get stuck in the flywheel.
By which I mean, it engages and spins the engine but if it does not fire the pinion may remain extended and so I have to disengage it.
The motor may be a little too close to the starter ring and tomorrow I will retract it a few mm but I wonder how tight should be the nut that holds the pinion onto the shaft?

Problem 1 solved  the nut on the end of the shaft at the back has come off so the retractor spring is not actuated.   It fell off in the garage in a space of 2 square feet do has completely vanished of course.
Still need to know about the nut on the front though.

David, it should be not to ticht so that you can operate the ratchet mechanism by hand.  On my starter if i turn it slowly i rotate the shaft, but if I give the pinion a 'swing' the ratchet mechanism operates.  Hope that makes sense....
