S2 rear bearing replacement
« on: 21 August, 2025, 02:39:08 PM »
I couldn't find the spec for the rear wheel bearing on the s2 Appia, so I'll pop it on here for future reference.
Wheel off, then drum.
The drive shaft is held on by a hub nut with 2 flats. This was the passenger side on a RHD car and the nut was left hand thread.3206 2rs is the bearing spec. Oil seal is 66 50 10

Hi
I have a leaking oil seal that is contaminating the brakes on the nearside rear. If I remove the hub is the seal easily replaced or is it necessary to remove the bearing cage to access it? The parts catalogue is not clear if the seal is on the outside or inside of the bearing cage.
Thanks

Also, do you know the torque setting for the hub nut and whether it is left hand thread for the nearside (left side)

So that bearing retaining nut has the seal pressed into it. Stops oil coming past the bearing

I just tightened it up until the tab washer aligned. No idea of torque, but shouldn't matter as the bearing is clamped on its outer race

That last pic may be confusing. It's just resting on the hub. That's not where it's mounted

Should have taken better pics, but the bearing retainer and seal should come off without pulling out the half shaft and bearing.

Thanks for all that, very useful. One last thing, when I order the seal is it a plain seal or a lip?
Where are you? If close by would love to come over and have a look before you put it all back together

It's a lip seal. I'm in Meath in Ireland. It's back together and I've put up 1200km since it was fixed.

Ha Ha.
Thanks for the info on the seal, I think I was over complicating the job and your pictures helped a lot.
Are you the guy who made a youtube video abut your car and extolling its virtues? If so I agree, the Appia is a lovely and under rated Lancia and ideal for those of us who cannot afford  to buy and maintain an Aurelia.

There was a YouTube video with my car, but wasn't me narrating. I'll drop the link in

You are always welcome to visit. The Irish rally is usually good fun.
