Interesting Points
« on: 05 November, 2025, 11:07:18 AM »
As previously discussed I am doing a rolling re-commissioning of a series 2. It rolls between jobs to improve the state of the car. Before I bought the car 18 months ago I knew absolutely nothing about Appias. I have been fixing cars all my life so I am a pretty average spanner merchant but have always been rather hesitant in taking on tasks where I have no previous knowledge, especially if it involves undoing things that are spring loaded. I have been astonished at the high level of engineering but equally frustrated at some of the complications. It appears to me that if Lancia could design/build something that worked 99% well for £1 they would discard that design and use one that worked 100% well for £25 even if it meant dismantling the whole car to reach that part.
I have had a lot of help and support in this project from various sources. This forum, the very knowledgable guys at the Surrey monthly meet and of course Jim from the consortium: thanks a lot all of you.
I thought it would be intesting to start a thread with useful points that owners have learnt through their years of fettling.
I will start with the first:
TDC on 1 and 4 is supposed to be found by lining up the 1/4 mark on the fly wheel cover with a tooth on the flywheel marked with an O. Peering down the back of the engine is hard enough but it took me an hour or so to actually notice an O on a tooth, It is very faint.
When I finally found it and lined the marks up I noticed that the woodruff key that locates the crank pulley is exactly at the 12 O'clock position. I wish I had known this before I started this particular job, I have now marked the O tooth with tipex but I don't know how long this will stay on.
Looking forward to your intersting points
Cheers
Simon
