Fettling the water pump

My water pump has a small leak past the gland.   I have dismantled it and found it original with gland packing rather than anything more kodern.  With what should I pack it - or is it possible to fit a modern seal in there somewhere?   There does not seem to be alot of room for this.

Hi David, I wrote this up with suggestions and bearing sizes under "servicing an Aprilia" - I did an original plus update because my first effort was less successful (but could still work with a sealant)

Thank you Simon.  I searched for "Aprilia water pump" but nothing came up.
I shall have another look this afternoon and consider what to do.     It should not be difficult to turn out the housing to 22mm.
