I had to do it .... Lambda 7th series
« on: 30 April, 2026, 08:12:01 PM »
A few years ago I bought a 1925 Amilcar CGS because I wanted a 1920's car and my garage was too small for a Lambda, but I was never really happy about that decision ....

However, things have changed and I have just bought a beautiful 7th series Lambda in the UK

We are due to collect her on Monday, drive to Portsmouth, sail to St Malo and then take 3 days to get home to Narbonne a 1000 kms away. Wish us "bon voyage", wave at us or just marvel at my naïvety - what could possibly go wrong !!

I will update as we go along, wish us luck ....

Fabulous! I am sure it will be an epic drive. Who's co-driver?
Its not the winning but taking part! or is it taking apart?

Thats certainly a sizeable 'first drive' Simon. What fun though. Has the car been regularly used recently?
Enjoy the ride. I cant wait to see it.

Thank you for your comments and support !!

Co-driver/travelling mechanic will be Juliet. Not sure how much driving she will do, but since we haven't decided on a route, or stops, yet she will be doing the planning on the hoof. I even bought a good old-fashioned Michelin road map so we can search out those lovely "green-lined" French roads

As an alternative to the above paper system, a friend did a Chat-GBT  "plan a route for an old car between X & Y, max speed 50mph, avoiding motorways etc " - interesting results

Need to be back by Thursday lunchtime, if possible

Wonderful Simon, looking forward to a GPS coordinate to GPS coordinate update as the three days progress!

Have a safe one and enjoy all that wind in your hair type driving!

Ref Chat GPT, I feel as if we have a new family member and he/she/it seems to play a quite useful part in so many conversations at home these days.
I am not a Luddite.....but I am beginning to enjoy the rare moments when he/she/it is patently incorrect.

Well , we made it !

Arrived home 3hrs ago after 1000kms in 3 and a bit days. Farnham to Portsmouth in the rain (descent of the South Downs on tiny roads in a downpour was a "baptism of fire") then hiding for a day in St Malo during a storm, before a fabulous trip across France.

It took 3 days - about 300kms per day - all on "route nationale" at about 60-65 kph with an average speed of 50kph. Exhausting but exhilarating as well

Couple of small issues, but nothing that stopped us ! I will write up a short piece for Viva Lancia, but we are home safe and sound and ready for a good night's sleep !!

Splendid, next stop Fobello now that you know that cruising a Lambda is both enjoyable and easy.
