Camshaft fibre/bronze gear
« on: 10 September, 2026, 07:29:55 AM »
On the way down the Col de Petit st Bernard the engine went ominously silent.   Investigation revealed that something had come loose and smashed the camshaft gear, both the fibre and the bronze.
I have an old gear, much worn, into which I could fit a new fibre insert but there would be little support from the bronze teeth as they are almost worn away.
Does this matter?   If it does, does anyone have any solution short of getting a new one made?
Incidentally, I am not home yet,nor is the car I am still doing battle with Europ Assist who seem not to be able to email me!

Sorry to read of your problem! Last Sunday I too broke a half shaft, and my Lambda is now in Val d'Aosta waiting for the truck to take it back to Switzerland.

I do not know on which side of the Petit St Bernard you are: French or Italian (Val d'Aosta)?

I would not use a used gear with fibre, but almost no bronze. Fibre would wear away very quickly!

Some possibilities:
- Nick Benwell certainly has some used (well used?) parts in his parts stash at The Phoenix
- I assume Tony S. also has some
- I think I have a good used set in Switzerland

But it depends on your aim:
- Do you want the parts to repair on site (I assume Aosta)
- Or will you have the Lambda shipped home by a recovery service (AA or similar), and do the repair then, in your garage?

If you want to repair and drive back, then you could also contact Guido Gotta in Bra. He most certainly has used or new gears, and best would be to go and see him - worth a visit! Bra is less than one hour South of Turin.

Finally, if you leave the car in Aosta, and need to get home, I recommend the bus from Aosta to Martigny (Switzerland), then the train to Geneva Airport, and a plane (normally Easyjet) to UK. The bus is at 11:15 am or 4:50 pm from Aosta.

The car is being recovered from France, as am I by hire car.   I shall be repairing it at home when we both get there.    I have access to a very good machine shop so, If I can get the original drawings from the Club library I could get one (?some) made.
The well worn gear I had with me might have lasted a hundred miles or so but not the 1000+ I need!

Glad to know both car and driver have found solution to get back home, alas separately!

For drawings just ask Joachim at LWR.
But why not buy the parts from Iain S. in Australia? He has them in stock. His mail info is in the Newsletter.

Mine too.   Yes I am home.  Hire car terrifying, too big too many electronic geegaws and steering wheel on the wrong side.   Did not use much petrol though!
