the reason for no brakes became clear!
« on: 25 November, 2007, 06:38:10 PM »
so, there i was thinking this weekend i'd sort the Dedra's brakes as they didn't work at all. so got pads, a bleeding kit, & some dot 4.

so, off come the wheels for the new pads, and all became clear as to why they didn't work, the drivers side front wheel had pads (badly worn) but no fluid, oh & a seized piston, & the passanger side had fluid but no pads at all!! as i've not really done this before, everything took much longer than it should have & in the end i had to give up, so roll on next weekend when i should be able to sort the brakes completely!

Hi Toby,
Remember our conversations by email,
Don't forget when you get to the rear calipers you need the tool to wind the pistons back, do not attempt to force them back or you will be looking at changing the calipers, as forcing them back will destroy the automatic handbrake adjusters.

Toby. Welcome.  If you go to your local garage and ask them to show you a caliper wind back tool, they will have one, and depending how well you get on with the garage, they may lend you the tool, or at least show you how it works, they are really easy to use, just a tip though, before you start loosen the handbrake cable until the the arms on the caliper go back against their stops, i.e. just so there is a tiny bit of slack on the cable, then you can wind back pistons . only wind the pistons back just so you can get the new pads in the caliper and over the discs with about a 1mm gap between the caliper and the back of the pads. Any probs send me a PM and I will send you my tel number and we can go through it over the phone. Cheers Roger.

Hi Toby,
Yes, no problem I can email the relevant bit from the manual, but personally I'd take Roger up on his offer ;D

btw, i took out the piston on one of the front brakes, to give it a clean etc... but now can't get it to fit back into the hole, the rubber keeps on bending in on itself, any suggestions??

get some rubber grease,  its red, a little smear a on the seal, and a little on the piston, make the piston is going in square, and try and revolve piston as inserting into caliper, if you have not got rubber grease, use clean brake fluid around rubber in caliper and piston. If that does'nt work, cut 2 holes in floor and use the flinstone method. ;D ;D
