On another issue troubling us Appia owners is main bearings their availability and cost. As one of the procurers for the Condsortium I had a trip to JEL BEARINGS (http://www.jelbearings.co.uk/index.php) just outside York. The nice man there told me he could bore out a worn main bearing cast in new white metal and then rebore to the correct size. The Consortium has at least 10 sets of knackered main bearings so it would probably work out quicker and cheaper than our friends in Italy. I had a chat with the oracle Don Cross and the only snag he could see would be the machining of the end face and the scroll for oil as this controls the end float. Any thoughts or comments on this would be most appreciated.

Putting the ladder up makes a lot of sense. Does the floor need to be strengthened ?

What about hanging things from the rafters , oh and maybe dig a cellar as well .......

I can help when I come over in early October

Can thoroughly recommended JEL, they have been most helpful and carried out top quality work on the Dilambda engine bottom end.

I might have to give him another visit and see if he can do anything with the endfloat part of the bearing

Well just got back last night from north of the border after a successful attempt to prise the S2 from it's 30 year slumber (tax disc from 1986 on the screen) Had a bit of a panic when we jacked up a wheel and found it was locked solid as I had forgot the hub puller but some wacks with an aluminium mallet and a bit of leverage with a long bar and it was freed off a bit. The other 3 wheels were not so stuck so we got the garage doors open and attempted to give ourselves a heart attack by pushing the wee beastie out into the daylight after 30 years.I must give praise to my mate Terry as he has a bit more bulk than me and he made the difference. I will let the pictures tell the story of the afternoon.

I think it looks interesting as a project for someone as Alex mentioned that he thinks the bottom end of the engine might have been tuned/upgraded as well as the head......
