The conrods and little ends are with a machine shop who made all the right noises about fitting the little ends to the conrods first otherwise you would get flats on the bearing service as the conrod nipped up the little end bush ever so slightly when it was pressed in.

Small win yesterday, one of the studs for the distributor mounting had lost some of it's thread over the last 62 years and it had resisted the locknut trick so the decision was made to weld a nut on and screw it out. So in my nice new fireproof overalls (bright orange) and using the automatic welding helmet we set too and it was out about 5 minutes later. Well chuffed. The distributor mount casting was cleaned up as well as the block, a rescued stud from the spare engine was fitted and another little job was out of the way.

Hi all
Had a session on the crankshaft and have cleaned up and sealed the first 2 plugs on the crankshaft and can now move on to do the other 6. Have fitted the front plug, the new crankshaft sprocket and the pulley/damper to check the plug is far enough down the threaded portion of the front of the crank so it is not fouling the pulley bolt.

Crank all sealed up with the pluggs gooped up and back in...question is do we put the bush back in the end of the crank at the flywheel end...this succumbed to the 'bread method'

Hope you are over the main issues now - following your rebuild with interest.

Just for my curiosity, when you have a mo, could you post pics of the whole crankshaft as I am finding the geometry quite fascinating, ie which is a crank bearing, which are the big-end bearings etc.

And what does it weigh ?

have spent the last day or so digging out the oilway? on the back of the crankcase...not sure what it feeds...it was solid right along it's full length with a chalky substance.

My thoughts on the gummed up oilway? is that it is a balance tube for the water jackets around the cylinder liners.

Hi all
Found another task to go along with the engine rebuild...the tacho drive is fed from the distributor drive on the top of the engine and when not in place leaves a big hole so it will have to go back on. I had noticed a replacement gear was available so decided to replace this and then refit the drive. Using the hydraulic press the pin was squeezed out till the old gear and the two washers could be removed and the steel? gear cleaned (I had chickened out of removing this as the brass into aluminium casting was giving me the collywobbles over snapping) On reassembly the gears were binding at a certain point, the two washers were moving so I surmise the fibre gear needs to 'bed in' to this end I fitted a cordless drill to the take off and gave it some revs with plenty of oil. I can only say this is a work in progress and I am not convinced it is as free as it should be.
