Hi, i am also working on a s1 appia and wondered if you could tell me where you got the bushes for gear change set up ? My car is quite tidy but the engine is stuck/seized the car had been idle for many years, also any other tips that you think might save time? Obviously I have read your thread on your s1, really interesting I hope your winning.  Regards dave diamond

Hi Dave
We should have a set of the bushes and rubber grommets in the Appia Consortiums stores up in Hartlepool...as a member you will get a discount on the parts and a newsletter plus access to a wealth of information and help from Consortium members.

Hi Jim I thought I had joined the consortium last year ,I thought I paid £20 to do so ? But obviously if more subs are owing I’m more than happy to pay? And furthermore if you tell the cost of parts I asked for and where the funds should go I,ll pay that as well. Dave d

Hi David
Right in the middle of moving house but sanity will be resumed next week hopefully. I will check on the bush/grommet situation and get in touch. The subs are due for 2020 around March so you will be paid up till then.

At last a bit of Appia time. On Friday I scoped out a machine shop who is willing to look at the helicoil problem with the block so today I set to and stripped the engine down again...good news none of the piston rings are damaged so should be good to go when I get the block sorted.

prompt service from the machine shop as they rang back the same afternoon to say the helicoil was done...nice see piccy. I have asked them to check out the front wheel cylinder to see if the can sleeve it in stainless steel.

All back together to where it was in January...will get on with the head and then the timing this week. Got lucky with the broken sump bolt.

Good bit of progress as the head is back on and all tightened up with no dramas. Had a go at the valve timing but still got the problem of the inlet cam moving and the valve clearance for piston No. 1 closing up when you rotate the exhaust cam. I will have to have a think about creating a method of locking the cams in place when they have been positioned. A rummage and compare shows that the bolts for the rear springs fit into the end of the camshaft so I think a longer threaded bolt or a bit of threaded bar with some locknuts might be the way forward to rotate the camshaft with a bit more control...a work in progress. Another idea was to just use the rocker shafts with just the rockers for cylinder No.1 as even with the tappet screws right back there is still some tension on the valves.

Valve timing done I removed all the rocker arms bar no 1 and it seemed to go OK so just the valve clearances to do, refit the spark plugs, put some oil in check the timing and we can have ago at starting it...I did notice when turning the little beast over there was some air being pushed out of the spark plug holes so that is encouraging.

I  would leave the spark plugs out until you have cranked it over and got oil pressure up to the valve gear etc first.
Good luck!

Sounds a sensible idea...might be the weekend before I get over to Hartlepool but a full day might see some progress
